STEP 1: Reference Notes
Make a quick reference sheet with the following information noted for a simple transition to better banking.
Helpful Hints
- Before you start. Gather the last three bank statements of the accounts you are closing.
- Make an Estimated Completion Date. Direct deposits usually take effect within three deposit periods, and automatic payments normally take effect within two withdrawal periods.
- Track Your Request. To confirm that your requests have taken effect, check your CSB statement. Sign up and log in to your online account here, or call (712) 792-4346.
- Follow Up. Keep your former account open until all direct deposits have been switched to your CSB account. If you don’t see the change take effect by your estimated completion date, contact the company.
- Reminder. Note that some companies or organizations, like the Social Security Administration, may require a special form. Contact the company or income source to confirm that no additional forms are required.
STEP 2: Make A Checklist
A switch kit checklist is crucial when changing banks, as it ensures a smooth, organized transition and minimizes the risk of financial disruptions.
The checklist below will help you transfer automatic payments, recurring transactions, and direct deposits, reducing the chance of missed payments or overdrafts. While this list is comprehensive, you may have additional items.
STEP 3: Address Automatic Payments
Gather and review your most recent bank statement. Using the switch kit checklist, note which companies make automatic payments from your account.
Check the company’s website or billing statements for instructions on how to send the notice of change. If you can’t locate the information, call the company. Complete the form linked below and submit as directed by the company. Automatic payments normally go into effect within two withdrawal periods. Track when you notify each company and check that the transition has taken effect two months later.
STEP 4: Address Direct Deposits
Review your most recent bank statement and list companies with automatic deposits or deductions (e.g., payroll, Social Security, alimony, dividends, disability payments).
Helpful Hints
Check the company’s website for instructions on how to send the notice of change. If you can’t locate the information, call the company. A voided check may be required. Confirm if any additional forms are needed. If multiple forms are required, make copies before proceeding. Complete the provided form and submit as directed by the company.
